Special thanks to Ana Lucia Villasis of Vancouver, WA, for providing us with adorable and authentic dress up clothes for our children.

From left, and third from left, are native Peruvian costumes typically worn for special national holidays; second from left, Little Red Riding Hood; fourth from left, a Colonial American costume; fifth from left, a clown costume, (with the head wear intended for the Colonial costume); and sixth, a chef apron (from another source).

Reading is Fundamental (RIF) volunteers from the New Dominion Women’s Club of McLean (NDWC) distributed free books and read to classrooms on November 16. Each child got to pick a family-themed book to take home in time for Thanksgiving.

The free books were made possible by the Reading is Fundamental program with a grant from Macy’s Be Book Smart campaign.

Christy Murray, a member of the NDWC is the RIF liaison to the Children’s Center. “NDWC feels fortunate that we can help instill a love of books and learning in the children attending the Center by reading to them and giving each child the opportunity to select a book to take home,” Murray said. “Macy’s Be Book Smart campaign has provided a much-appreciated boost to the RIF program at the Center.”

Reading is Fundamental of Northern Virginia sought and received a Macy’s grant of $25,500 to purchase books for the Children’s Center and 11 other RIF programs throughout Northern Virginia that the group supports each year. RIF aims to serve at-risk children from birth to age 8.

NDWC has contributed grant money annually for more than 30 years to purchase books through RIF for distribution at the Children’s Center. Macys has supported the RIF program since 2004, raising more than $21 million for RIF and its community-based programs.

We thank RIF of NOVA for securing the funding for the books and NDWC for its continuing support of free books and their visits to our classrooms.

The Children’s Center is excited to welcome our new Executive Director, Kathy Banks. Ms. Kathy takes over as our former Executive Director, Elizabeth Page, retires after 11 years of service.

Kathy comes to us from Lynchburg, Virginia where she lived for 20 years. Growing up as an “Army Brat”, Kathy spent her childhood living throughout the United States as well as overseas. Kathy has an M.Ed. in Early Childhood Teaching and Learning from Liberty University. She has worked as an Early Childhood Education consultant in Central Virginia, is a certified National Trainer and has worked as a Quality Rater with the Virginia Star Quality Initiative. She has over 24 years of experience in Early Childhood Education and has worked at a variety of non-profit centers. Beginning her career as a preschool teacher at the Children’s Hospital of the Kings Daughters in Newport News, Virginia, Kathy went from being in the classroom to eventually becoming director of childcare for the YMCA of Central Virginia. Kathy has also worked as the director of the Child Care Resource and Referral office in Central Virginia, assisting parents in understanding and finding quality early learning programs for their children. Kathy’s passion is ensuring that every child receives the strong foundation needed for success and that families find the resources necessary to build on that foundation. Kathy has two boys, CJ, 14 years old, and Mikey, 12 years old. She has settled in Centreville and is excited about the move and the possibilities that will follow.

“From the first moment I walked into the Center, I knew we were a perfect fit. I feel honored to be added as a part of this great team, and am excited about all the great opportunities that lie ahead” ~ Kathy Banks.

Please stop by the office and welcome Ms. Kathy!
