Children’s Center Teacher Susi Coro, known as Ms. Susi to children and parents, was honored as a recipient of the Devotion to Children Teacher Appreciation Award at Devotion’s 16th Annual Red, Heart & Soul Gala on Friday, Nov. 16 at the Ritz Carlton in Tysons Corner.

Ms. Susi received the first-time award, along with three other local preschool teachers, from its creator Stephen Cumbie, CEO of NVCommercial, Inc. of Vienna, VA. The award was established in honor of Adella W. Cumbie, his mother who was one of the first Head Start teachers in the nation. She died in 2013.

Ms. Susi and other award recipients were selected based on their leadership and communication skills, willingness to be involved and share instructional expertise with colleagues, positive impact on students, their ability to incorporate new teaching methods into the classroom, commitment to mentoring colleagues, and respect and recognition by peers. She has been a teacher at the Children’s Center for nine years. In addition to a crystal apple-shaped award, each award recipient also received $2,000 in honor of her exceptional accomplishments as a preschool teacher.

Devotion to Children is a generous supporter of the Children’s Center through its scholarships to low-income families.
