The Race to Give All Children a Strong Start
On the sunny afternoon of September 28, 2014, more than 250 runners and walkers from
age 2 to 82 turned out for the Second Annual Teddy Bear 5K & 1K Walk/Run.
Through registration fees, generous sponsorships, silent auction purchases made that day, raffle tickets purchased for a chance to win one of the donated children’s bicycles, and the direct donations, the event netted an amazing $20,000 in support of the Children’s Center’s high-quality, early childhood education program.
We thank all the volunteers who gave of their time in the days and weeks before Race Day…
McLean Woman’s Club members who stuffed runner bags with T-Shirts, bibs, and swag and organized them well for ease of packet pick up day. Children’s Center parents, teachers, and staff and George Marshall High School students who cheerfully greeted runners and registered many more who came to Road Runner Sports on Saturday, Sept. 27 to pick up their race packets.
We thank American Legion Post 130 members, especially John Johnson, who allowed us to take over their entire parking lot for our Fun Fair. Thanks for letting us crowd your pool room with our many boxes of Silent Auction items and and other materials over the weekend, making it possible to set up quickly on Sunday.
Our Fun Fair and Silent Auction on Race day couldn’t have happened without generous donations from many local organizations, restaurants, retailers and individuals who contributed tickets to events, dinners, and myriad of other items for bidding. Hats off to Center teacher Ms. Jimmy who created the games and photo cut-out boards for the fair.
Special thanks to Center teacher Ms. Daniella for her colorful, sparkly creations painted on the runners’ faces. And to the lady dressed in mismatched sox Julie Zaumer who twisted and coaxed balloons into aliens, animals and anything else children requested.
Many thanks to George Marshall High School students, Chesterbrook Elementary School students, Center Board Members, who served as race marshalls, handing out water to runners and keeping them on course. We greatly appreciate the Falls Church City Police Officers and other officers from neighboring jurisdictions who kept our runners safe from traffic where the W&OD Trail intersects with the Little City’s streets. Endless thanks to Lieutenant Joe Carter who talked them into giving up their off-duty Sunday afternoon. Thanks to the residents on Oak and Fulton Streets who let our runners take over the neighborhood for the afternoon.
And to all the Runners and Walkers who supported the Center through their registrations and put their soles to pavement for a good cause. Thank You! Many more people behind the scenes, including our teachers, staff, and board members, contributed time, talent and treasure to make this event a triumph, including our generous sponsors listed below. We are very grateful for your generosity!
Finally, merci beaucoup to Center parent Elizabeth Barry for lending her time and expertise with her camera. She caught all the triumphs and emotions of the day so we can remember them, year after year.
